SYMPTOMS

Bipolar & Related Disorders

Bipolar is a mental illness that causes severe mood swings. Someone suffering from bipolar experiences manic highs and deep depressive phases. Bipolar is treatable, although there is no cure for it. This may sound like a daunting prospect, but with a good support system and the right treatment programme, patients can live a fulfilling life.

There are four types of bipolar disorders:

Bipolar I Disorder

Bipolar I disorder can be defined by manic episodes that last for at least 7 days,  or by manic symptoms that require immediate hospital care.

Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II can be defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomania episodes, but not as full-blown manic episodes as with bipolar 1 disorder.

Cyclothymic Disorder

Cyclothymic disorder can last at least 2 years, wherein the patient suffered from periods of hypomanic symptoms as well as numerous periods of depressive symptoms. However the symptoms do not match the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic episode or a depressive episode.

Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorder

Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders can be defined by bipolar disorders that do not match the previous three categories stated above.
